Vision Correction Options

LASIK nearly always results in improved vision without correction. However, LASIK is an imperfect procedure that does not always result in 20/20, or even 20/40 visual acuity.Advances in the understanding of how to better treat eye conditions, eye disorders and eye diseases have led to development of new technologies and procedures for treatment.

LASIKWhat makes a good LASIK candidate? Appropriate levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism Relative intolerance of glasses or contact lenses Properly motivated and realistic patient The difference between traditional LASIK and custom LASIK (Wavefront)Wavefront TechnologyThis breakthrough treatment establishes a new standard in laser vision correctionWaveScan technology provides your eye doctor with a map of your eyeAfter WaveScan, patients notice results immediately, and their vision will continue to improve over the next few daysWavefront-guided LASIK is an elective procedure with the alternatives including but not limited to eyeglasses, contact lenses, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), conventional LASIK, and other refractive surgeriesRisks: Custom LASIK does have risks but it also produces better visual improvement than one-size-fits-all LASIK procedures and there is a lower incidence of undesirable side effects such as halos and glare

Implantable Contact LensesImplantable contact lenses are powerful additions to the present refractive options, especially for those individuals whose refractive errors presently fall out of the range for LASIKWhat makes a good candidate? Typically, the best candidates for implantable contact lenses are between the ages of 21 and 55, with moderate to severe myopia.Implantable contact lenses, known as phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs), are powerful refractive tools with almost unlimited potential to correct refractive errors (nearsightedness and farsightedness)Unlike LASIK vision correction, the procedure is completely reversibleRisks: rarely do patients experience complications with implantable contact lenses and when complications do occur, they are typically minor when handled expeditiously

Ill doctor's undone autopsy reports cause for concern

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Dr. Johnny Glenn, the lone forensic pathologist performing autopsies in one of the poorest parts of Alabama, was slipping.

In hundreds and hundreds of cases, he would examine bodies but put aside his notes, never finishing the final reports or filling in the diagrams that are so crucial to death investigations. He was also missing subtle but important clues. At times, he just seemed sad.

But because Glenn worked with virtually no supervision, the extent of the backlog - and exactly what he was going through personally - would not become clear until after he abruptly resigned in 2004.

Documents show Glenn, 64, is afflicted with dementia, severe depression and other ailments.

Now, more than two years after his departure, an untold number of criminal cases have been thrown into jeopardy by Glenn's breakdown, according to interviews with prosecutors and defense attorneys.

New AAEP Web Site Delivers More Equine-Health Resources

Guided by its mission to improve the health and welfare of the horse, the American Association of Equine Practitioners has relaunched its Web site, http://www.aaep.org, with new educational tools for veterinarians and the addition of equine-health resources for horse owners. The AAEPs site formerly dedicated to equine health for the non-veterinarian myHorseMatters.com is now part of aaep.org. Veterinarians and horse owners can conveniently access customized equine health articles and tools in the same location. The AAEP site will continue to offer its popular online resource for horse owners, Ask the Vet. Each month an AAEP-member veterinarian answers questions from horse owners on a specific topic. During the month of March, Dr. Danielle Bercier from Baldwin Animal Clinic in Summerdale, Ala., discusses equine ophthalmology.

Funding for newcomers to region

Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Mike Colle announced $1.5 million in funding to help newcomers in Waterloo Region settle and get jobs in their field.

"We're thinking outside the GTA box. This is part of our plan to create regional immigration gateways throughout the province," said Colle. "We're creating community partnerships, investing in innovative new programs that break down barriers for the internationally trained, and marketing K-W as a leading destination for skilled newcomers."

* Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce will receive $400,000 to expand the Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN) to connect K-W employers to skilled newcomers. Key partners include Conestoga College, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Communitech Technology Association and the Waterloo Region District School Board.
